If you are looking for dual duty furniture, the Hydra Table does it and makes it fun at the same time. With a solid pedestal base and a simple hydraulic lifting mechanism, you can go from coffee table to dining table in moments.

I know of a designer who created a similar table, using the base to a vintage barber's chair, which he had nickel-plated, then fitted with a glass top.

While the hydra tables are sorta nice (they remind me of the salon chairs in my mother's salon), I like the version that "Calumet" posted better. The price is MUCH lower on those and they look more home-friendly. Plus you wouldn't have the lever sticking out in someone's way if they should be sitting at the table in dining height. The marine table seems to be the better way to go.
I was just looking into designing my own coffee table that lifts to dining height for my small living room. I think I'll buy a base and get my own wood.

Wow I hate these. They look like hair salon chairs. Years ago I saw beautiful adjustable tables from the 30s in Soho - gorgeous wood. But this is just yuck.
