This is a new idea: a persistent post for your tips only.

We get a lot of emailed tips, and we blog as many as we can, but some get left on the cutting room floor. So, in addition to sending us emails, we're going to experiment with taking tips right here (you can still email us).

We'll be pulling the best tips to posts on the front page, but this will insure that the all tips are shared immediately.

Got a tip?

Know of a great store, product or website? Let us know right here (no questions please).

If I may be so bold as to humbly suggest that the logo be revised to allow for a closer relationship between the 'T' and the 'i'? Right now, that letterspacing is a bit of an eyesore. Hope that counts as a tip. :)

BTW, I discovered your blog the other day through a friend, and I'm hooked. I enjoy your posts a lot. Keep up the great work!

Tip about a great moving company!

Boyfriend and I moved on August 31st (probably the busiest moving day of the year...) and we used Dumbo Moving and Storage in Brooklyn. Awesome choice if you don't feel like paying movers to drive from manhattan. I called around to all the company's listed on this site but they were too pricey. Dumbo is a flat rate company, you call and tell them approx. how much you have and your furnture and they quote you a fixed price. Thats all we paid! No extra fees or hidden charges. We paid $528 to move a one bedroom apt with a normal amount of furniture and about 35 boxes. We ended up having more than we thought but the guys were super nice about it. We gave them a big tip which helped but it was well deserved! They were really nice and put my nervous boyfriend at ease. They joked around with us and had everything done by noon (started at 9am). Nothing got broken or damaged. Best move I've ever had. Would definitely use them again!

Need to remove layers of paint from door hardware (backplates, hinges, knobs, etc.)?

1. Get a Crockpot (cheap at Goodwill!)

2. Add hardware

3. Cover with water

4. Add 1/4 cup liquid laundry detergent

5. "Cook" on middle setting overnight

In the morning, the layers of paint will just fall off the metal/glass. It's amazing. You might need to use a toothpick/toothbrush for detail work, but the majority of the paint will come right off with no effort at all. I've stripped dozens of hinges (some with so much paint on them the doors would no longer close!!) and other hardware in my Victorian house over the past year, and this method has been a huge timesaver.

(Tip originally seen in TOH magazine!)

When I have a party and anticipate a number of people using my bathroom - I provide a basket of about a dozen large, plush white washcloths along with the handtowels normally provided.
I also leave a matching empty basket for the disposal of those washcloths... that way everyone gets their own, clean towel.

I know for me, the worst thing about using the restroom at a party is drying your hands on an already damp towel... that only gets wetter as the night goes on! Eew... you don't know how well other people wash their hands!
And no one wants to use the towel that we presumed the host used for their shower!

Anna - does that work for all kinds of paint?
Latex...100 years of leaded oil paint...intriguing

If you're having doors dipped, you can put all the hardware on a wire hanger and send it along for dipping too...

Need custom sized dinning table?

Room & Board does custom sizes! The standard 36" diameter round table was slightly too large for my space, so they offered a custom tabletop only 32" diameter. They do all sorts of custom sizes, although I can't find any reference to it on their website or catalogue.

It looks awesome! And is the perfect fit.

The table (with chrome base and walnut top) shows in some of the pics at: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/apa/419547399.html

I posted this on AT:Kitchen, but I thought it might be useful here too -

I was looking through the new Martha Stewart collection on the Macy's website, and found this helpful page - it's under the "More from Martha" link on their Kitchen page, and it's a pretty thorough explanation of how to clean all the different areas of your kitchen - oven, fridge, countertops of different materials, small appliances, etc. She might be a little over-zealous with it - she recommends cleaning some things once a week that I clean once every few months - but I thought it was a really helpful guide, so I printed it out for future reference - http://tinyurl.com/2dyqtn

Ugg, sorry, the link doesn't work. But if you go to the Macy's website, & to the Martha Stewart Collection, Click on Kitchen, then on "A clean Kitchen from Top to Bottom" under "More from Martha."

clickchick - great idea. I just had a little party and could have used your idea since I have so many white washcloths. Oh well, next party.

I just moved to Park Slope, and had such a great experience with a local moving company, Dumbo Moving, that I had to spread the word. I needed a mover at the end of September, and everyone was booked. A friend of mine recomended Dumbo Moving, and I gave it a whirl, expecting them to be fully booked. But they were super accomodating and they fit me in. The price they offered was very reasonable, and the move itself went really well. The guys showed up on time and were very polite. They treated my things gingerly, and nothing received so much as a tiny scratch. Overall, the whole thing went down really smoothly. So ... if you are in need of NYC movers, try Dumbo Moving & Storage. They are superb!!

Thanks to Amanda who recomended Dumbo Moving & Storage. Based on your comment, I did a online research on them, and after reading other good reviews of them I contacted them. Dumbo Moving offered a real affordable price. The contact in the office that we worked with was a guy named Lior - he was very nice and very upfront and honest about everything. I just felt like we could trust him, about the price not changing on the day of the move, and how good their service was goign to be. He was very convincing, so we booked the job, and were not disappointed. In fact, the move itself went extremely well. Everyone showed up on time (which I was not expecting, and had not even finished packing yet!), so the crew even helped me pack up some last minute things. They did not even charge me. They were just very polite and helpful. They moved all of our things to the new apartment and helped us set up the furniture - nothing received even a scratch. I was so releived. So because our experience with Dumbo was so good, I had to write this review to direct others out there who are looking for good, honest, reliable movers in NYC. So, thank you!!
