Miele Canister Vacuum: Pisces S5280 In the Test Lab

Price: $650

Rating: Recommend*

Have you ever fallen in love with a vacuum cleaner? After months of indecisiveness (and dustiness), I finally splurged on a new vacuum to replace the junk that threw dirt around my apartment. Behold, the Miele Pisces S5280! After a lot of web research (including a bunch of older AT posts and comments) and some in-person inspecting at Desco, I took the plunge...

3-19-miele-pisces-2.jpg

While expensive, a Miele vacuum gets lots of raves and very few rants (check out the comments in the
Best Products: Miele Vacuums
post). I was shopping for a vacuum that would be a good fit for my hardwood floors and small area rugs. Living on the first floor with tiny windows, my apartment gets extremely dusty. The added bonus of an effective HEPA filter on my vacuum would help in keeping the air cleaner. (We loved this video for a demonstration of HEPA effectiveness.)

I started looking at the S4 range of Miele. It uses the same bags as the S5 series, but because the body of the vacuum is smaller, you are only partly filling the bags with the S4. I decided to upgrade to the S5 series for the larger size (less changing bags), integrated accessory storage (see below), included HEPA filter ($50 value) and the included parquet and turbobrush attachments...

The Pisces comes with a parquet brush for hard floors...

and a air-powered rotating Turbobrush for low-to-medium pile carpet...

The TurboBrush actually lifted our new FLOR tiles off the ground when it was on the highest setting.

This is the quietest vacuum I've ever used. There are six manual settings that change the power and noise level of the machine. The curtains setting is whisper-quiet. It won't pull down your window dressings but will still suck out the dust. Even the highest setting is quieter than most vacuums.

I'm super happy with my purchase. It was expensive, but I've already noticed the improved cleanliness of my apartment. I will have this vacuum for a long time. (If I had a bigger home and lots of carpet, I'd dream of the Miele Capricorn!) I would rate this Simply Irresistible if it was more affordable.

Pros:
HEPA Air Filter
Very Quiet
Integrated storage for accessories
Long cord (29.5' cleaning radius!)

Cons:
Expensive

I'm searching for a new vacuum myself. Did it come with any kind of warranty?

i have fallen in love with my miele! after my finance and i split up, it was the vacuum he was quick to protect as his possession. my vacuum (another miele) is now 4 years old and still runs perfectly. of note, the replacement bags are hard to find for me in my area but i hear you can buy them online. i highly reccommend.

I bought a Miele Capricorn last month, in part because of some of the comments made here. I am thrilled with it! It's a pleasure to use, so quiet that I can't believe it, and has really helped to relieve my allergy symptoms. Of course, the purchase price was breathtaking-- but I am convinced that it was well worth the investment. Erin, I bought it online from Witbeck (hope it's ok to say this; I am in no way connected to them nor will I benefit from the mention), which offers a 12-month interest- free finance deal and a warranty. Excellent customer service, to boot.

How does the Miele stack up against Dyson? We have an aging vacuum cleaner that is losing the war with my 2 cats.

i have whatever the highest level miele vacuum is (capricorn? one of those signs!) and while it cost more than my monthly maintenance payment it was the best thing i could have done for my apartment! we have 2 cats and a dog and the hair used to make me want to cry even with vacuuming every other day. now i whip through the apartment 3 times a week and it gets EVERYTHING in its path! i can't believe the difference it has made in my life! if i weren't already married and it were legal i would marry my miele. seriously, i cannot say enough good things about it. my friends all thought i was crazy until i made them use it... now they understand. it not only has incredible suction but it also is easy to move around an apartment with furniture in it. it is light weight and has wonderful upholstery attachments that actually work. i really can't say enough about my miele... i also bought mine at desco and the guy who sold it to me was honest and very clear about the differences in the styles. it has a pretty good warranty if i remember correctly... i believe it was one of the points i used in my rationalizing the price to my husband. and yes, he is now a convert too! expensive yes... but if you can swing it, it is without a doubt worth every penny.

I also went to Desco and purchased the Aries. I had buyer's remorse the entire way home about how much I spent. After using this baby the first time- there is no looking back. I ditto what everyone else has said about it. The Turbo attachment is amazing. It actually rotates on its own motor. My carpets have never been so clean. I found the owner of Desco very knowledgeable and honest. I believe there is a 5 year warranty.

I have to agree with all of the above. Love the lightweight manoeuvrability, love that it's so quiet and versatile. We considered the Dyson but it's louder and somewhat more cumbersome due to the all-in-one construction. Miele rocks!

i have a miele white star and, still 8 years later, it was one of the best appliance purchases i've ever made. the thing is awesome! i have never had problems with it and it works better than any vacuum i've ever tried. all hail miele!

I am so back and forth on this subject. Do I get the Kenmore that was highly rated by Consumer's Digest (but slammed by many of their readers) or do I break down and get the Miele Mango??? Can I rationalize paying $800 for a vacuum? Aren't we entering into a recession? yet, I want an effective vacuum that will not break down. Aghhhhhhh!!

sammie2: I was in a similar situation. I've spent the last 6 months trying to figure out which vacuum to purchase. I was tired of the more affordable ones breaking or flinging dirt around. A lot depends if you are vacuuming hard floors or carpet (or what kind of combination) and if you have pets. I am thrilled with my Miele purchase!

Regarding all of you that are worried about the Miele warranty, two words. Thirty years. That's how long you will have a Miele without a problem. My grandmother had one and it lasted longer then that without one problem. They are WORK HORSES - they NEVER break - That is German Engineering for you. I bought my Miele when I could pay my rent and have pocket money, but could not affort anything else. Yet I saved over 6 months and I purchased my Miele - it was more in the $400 range and it does not have a HEPA filter, but it does perform a GREAT job. If you are not concerned with allergies and want a GREAT vacuum that is very versatile, you can purchase a Miele for less then $500. There is a shop in Astoria Queens that has the Miele authorized dealership that has absolutely everything you need from the cheapest to the most expensive and all the accessories. Check it out on a Saturday morning and stop at Stamatis for a lovely Greek lunch on the way. I believe the shop is on Broadway and 35th 36th Street...
Oh and one time I broke the hook that holds the wand to the vacuum when stowed away, just walked to the store and they had it on stock for $12... that easy. Love when u get everything locally.

mdeathstrar, my previous vacuum was a dyson 14 low reach (purple and red model). The Miele arrived before I sold the Dyson on craisglist, so I was able to test them side by side; whether I was getting a bit obsessive or merely needed to make sure the purchase was a solid one (the vendor has a generous return policy and it would have gone straight back) is for you to decide. I was extremely gratified, and very relieved, to see that the Miele needed one pass to pick up the Capture carpet cleaner I had spread out for this purpose. (Capture is a somewhat thick, white powdery substance, in case you aren't familiar with it. It is supposedly a really green, healthy product and good for people with carpets and dust allergies.) The Dyson, which unlike the Miele sounds like it would suck up the apartment below me, needed four or five passes to get most of it up, six to get that section of the carpet as clean as the one I used for the Miele.

Another benefit is not having to open the Dyson in order to clean out the canister. I can't believe that I never thought twice about that when I originally bought it. Further, my Dyson generally had dust on after I had finished the job. Not so with the Miele- and I've dusted it to make sure! Finally, it is said that Miele cleans the air before expelling it as exhaust; I believe this to be true. My apartment just smells cleaner.

I've owned the S4780 Orion for two years and love it. I, too, hated spending 600 dollars for a vacuum, but after using it once, I was hooked. I have all wood floors (except for low pile carpet on the stairs). It's quiet, lightweight, and a joy to use (joy may be a stretch since I still don't love housework). This model also has power controls on the handle to allow for adjusting the power.

I purchased the optional handheld turbo brush for upholstery and the stairs, and it was well worth it as well. I own two cats who shed a lot, so this is a perfect vacuum for me.

If anyone from Chicago is reading this post, I purchased mine from Best Vacuum (www.bestvacuum.com) from their store on the 2600 block of Lincoln Ave. They are always helpful and friendly -- from the initial purchase, to subsequent trips for bags, etc.

You guys are Insane! Is this some sort of insane persons vacuum support group?

You talk about reliability? At that price the vacuum better fix my other appliances when they break.

You can get a Better vacuum at half the price.

Don't tell me how much you spent on your toasters.

Thanks, I feel much better now!

I have the blue Miele Sirius vacuum and I L-O-V-E it!

After having a $70 Dirt Devil for at least 12 years, it was time to move on.

Yes, the Miele was expensive, but I figured if it lasted as long as the Dirt Devil did, then it would be fine.

My beautiful little Sirius Blue is whisper quiet, which I appreciate, my dog appreciates, and I'm sure my downstairs neighbor appreciates as well.

It did a great job on the pine needles this Christmas, and I noticed that there was a lot less residual smell/dust in the air after big cleans.

Hi, my name is Marie, and I'm a Miele-aholic.

Through a particulate analysis on YouTube, I show how well the Miele vacuum works and truly traps the dust. My findings prove that the Miele Vacuum is completely sealed and really is HEPA.

Miele Vacuum Video As Featured on ABC 7 News

You can see from this video that the Miele will trap all of the particles in a cloth like bag that self-seals on its way out and you are actually purifying the air in your house by vacuuming! The filtration is 99.95% effective at 0.3 microns which is amazing. Thanks to its HEPA filter and super intensive clean bags the vacuum is able to achieve this kind of filtration.

Also check-out my blog called Consumer Reporter - a vehicle to educate consumers about the vacuum and air purification market.
