Top 10: Market Umbrellas

6-5-market-umbrella.jpg

We've bought a lot of market umbrellas over the years. Why? Because the cheap ones we've always used break easily. Last year we upgraded and the umbrellas are still in good shape. In this category, you really do get what you pay for. Good link: Good Questions: Best Outdoor Umbrella Picks?

  • Home Decorators Collection: The cheapest we've bought. Starting at $89, these have been our staple and last 2-3 years. Fabric is solid colors only and called Derclon, which is mildew resistant cotton/poly.

  • Overstock.com: This is your bargain basement. Prices start at $50, but watch out for the quality.

  • Crate & Barrel: This is our upgrade. Starting at $250, the Taos line is particularly nice (we like the Salsa stripes). The brass fittings are real and the fabric is Sunbrella (good stuff).

  • Restoration Hardware: The Montauk umbrellas look like they are a slight level up from Crate & Barrel, but you never know. Starting at $270, the colors here are really nice, particularly the Topaz.

  • Westminster Teak: Want teak? Westminster offers Sunbrella and safe harvested teak with sturdy assembly for $560.

  • Curran: These are luxe. Starting at @$1000, Curran has both a wood and a metal style (the Ocean Master) that is super cool.

  • Janus et Cie: Imported from Europe, these are top of the line and come in unique shapes, sizes and colorways. Starting at $1850 for ash and $2655 for teak, you might want to hire a decorator to get you a discount.

Just wanted to say thanks for the article. It got us started on the right track for finding an umbrella for our deck.

having tried both, I have to warn you that the expensive ones wear no better than the cheap ones. In fact, I've had the best luck with cheap ones from Odd Job Lot--lasted several seasons and the fabric washed nicely.

a related question: any ideas where to find a canvas beach tent ... something like a small (modernist) cabana?

I'm uncertain whether being able to afford a $2000 umbrella means I have arrived, or have completely lost my marbles.

That said, I have a trusty $40 version that I got at Wegmans, and it still looks great going into its 2nd summer. I guess we'll see how long it lasts...

Unless I decide to use my market umbrella to till my flower beds, I'll never buy one for more than $40. We bought one at BJ's Wholesale (similar to Sam's Club) 6 years ago that still works and looks great. And we've left it outside for 6 years as well, in the rain, snow and 1" hail storms. :) Happy dining al fresco to all!

just bought one at Glorious Home - great and affordable except...you can't change the angle of the umbrella. Huge design problem- in the late afternoon we have to haul the table across the roof from the umbrella (roof deck) to get under the shade.

I have some very nice umbrellas with Sunbrella fabric that I bought at Costco in 2001.

Trouble is, the string on one of them that attaches to the crank has broken.

I've searched the net for replacements or instructions to DIY, to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

There really is nothing like Sunbrella fabrics for outdoor umbrellas. There are some great patio umbrellas and Cushions And Umbrellas, all made with sunbrella fabrics.
