Why not? The truth is that we don't know enough pet stores in this city, but wish we did, so here we go...
Nominate your favorite pet store in New York City and back it up with THREE GOOD REASONS. IF YOU ARE LUCID & COMPELLING we'll enter it into our stores archive for all to see...

i'm trying to respond to this, but am not able to due to "questionable content" in my post. It's a post about cat food; I'm at a loss as to what could be questionable... ?
Pet Bar South in Tribeca
free delivery of heavy bags of food and litter,
vast selection of healthful foods, great staff. Just yesterday, I ordered delivery of cat food. They were out of the 10 pound bag of my brand so gave me the 20 pound for the price of the 10.
Your site is finding my eloquent nomination of Whiskers on 9th St (1st/2nd) to be objectionable. How can an excellent selection of holistic products, great staff, and delivery+open on xmas be objectionable? Plus a kitty "rescue ranch"?
Phoebe and Hazel -- colons are "questionable content". If you remove them, the posts will be fine. Be sure to remove them from urls as well.
Im a big fan of Spoiled Brats on 49th between 8th and 9th.
The sheer variety of good dog and cat foods is unbelievable, and the staff is fantastic. It's a little hole in the wall (with rescued cats wandering through the store, rubbing up against the customers and hoping to be adopted) but it's got a dedicated customer base in the neighborhood - the PetLand Discounts that opened half a block away several years ago hasn't seemed to hurt them at all.
My favorite pet store in the city, by far, is the estimable if uncreatively named Whiskers on 235 9th Street. The owners are incredibly knowing about holistic petcare, and very generous with that knowledge. They have an amazing selection of byproducts-free (pet)food. And they deliver--even to Brooklyn!
in my opinion, you just can't beat Le Pet Spa, Bobby is THE BEST!
From the Upper East Side..
-Calling All Pets - 2 locations (76th & 2nd, York and 84th) - All the basic necessities you need in one store. They will order stuff for you if they don't have it.
-Bark Place - (72nd bet. 1st & York) this is more of pet boutique (no food) but they have great pet toys, cool sweaters, home-made cookies and treats, books, picture frames, cards...etc.. My dog always finds something that he MUST have there!
Z Spot - Madison and 75/76th Streets - totally high end and decadent pet accessories. Lots of Fifi & Romeo and other designers. Breed specific decor for your special friend!
(It's very hard to come up with a top 10 list, because I go to different stores for different products.)
Also - not a store but in the same area - NYC Pet Supply - Seymour will deliver pet food right to your door, and has GREAT prices. The lowest prices I found on Innova and Greenies - www.nycpetsupply.com
Also - I don't know if it needs to be said or not...but please DON'T shop at pet stores that sell puppies! Even buying a small treat or can of food is contributing to puppy mills!
If you go to www.nopuppymills.com - they can provide you with information on which puppy mills that your pet store buys from and where your puppy might have come from.
FETCH. Hands Down. Great toys, accessories, beds, clothes, shampoos, and gourmet treats. Also, Fetch caters not only to the lap dogs but also recognizes all of us with larger dogs. Oh yeah, they have stuff for rats (oops I mean cats) too.
I disagree about Whiskers being a great pet store...yes, they are very knowledgeable and generous (by giving their front window over to potential adoptees), but they aren't very courteous to their neighbors.
I used to live in the building across 9th Street - there is a bus stop right there in front of Whiskers and the owners would encourage their customers to park there while shopping in the store! So when the M8 bus would come, it would have to stop in the middle of 9th Street, so cars would back up behind it and honk. I went in there and pointed this out to them, but they didn't seem to care about the fact that the constant honking was very annoying to the store's neighbors (not to mention the fact that parking in a bus stop is illegal).
Zoomies (boutique) for everything you'll never find anywhere else, the caring and knowledgable owners and their special events. Whiskers for organic dog food-supplements and Poshy Pads (absolutely the best housetraining pads).
We would be lost without Beastie Feast, which is a chain. They have all the good food, treats, dental care, and nylabones. No expensive collars to tempt you, just all the stuff you need.
I only shop at Doggystyle in SOHO - they have the best selection of everything, especially collars! The people who work there are great and they're nice to you whether or not you buy something. You can't say that about a lot of stores...
SCOUT in the east village offers great clothing/treats but so do all the boutiques. But what sets them apart are the special events -- they've had a wine tasting & dog treat party, themed birthday parties, a pool party and all sorts of classes. They have a backyard deck that's perfect for these things...
Pet Stop on Columbus @ 87th...
I would like to mention something about a pet store in Chelsea. Aprroximately two years ago, I bout a yellow lab retriever, with my partner who lives in Manhattan. We were told SEVERAL TIMES that Olyve (our dog) is/was AKC certified. After buying our little sweetheart we were told that we would receive her papers in about two weeks. Well, two weeks went by; and no papers. So we called. "Oh! they are on there way!" they said. Then two months passed, and we stopped in. "What was your name again?" they said. "Which dog did you buy?" they said. This cat and mouse game went on for about 1 year, and then I got legal on their assess, and FINALLY got the papers. GUESS WHAT? Olyve is/was NOT AKC certified. AND!! thanks to this modern invention (called the internet), we discovered that Olyve is from a PUPPY MILL in the SOUTH. Now, it isnt that we don't love Olyve, but LE PETITE PUPPY should be put out of business for fraudulent business practice, supporting cruelty to animals, and just being total fucking asshole, snobbish pricks from HELL. DONT BUY ANY ANIMAL FROM LE PETITE PUPPY (in Chelsea)!!!!!
I found your site on a search for pet stores. I am looking for an awsome web designer for my new ... dont know what to call it I hate pet store, but I sell a few small breed puppies.. I am a pet groomer that decided if you cant beat them join them.. and if you join them reset the bar.. but everytime I do a search I get these dont buy from pet store web sites.. ok confession time... our first time out after I did extensive research, I decided my partner and I should buy from Hunte Corp.. they had awsome garnetees.. and we did not mind paying extra if we were getting better qaulity puppies..being new I decided a broker would be safer.. because buying from different breeders would be a huge risk... I know from experince just because the pups come from an aparently clean respectable place. does not ensure perfection.. I also know from being 27 years in the canine industry all aspects of it are dirty.. the ones that cater to the public with all the BS are usually the worse ones behind the scences..I had a new grooming customer who stepped out of a hummer hand me a 6 month old maltese pup.. it was very small and cute.. I now always ask where they got thier pups.. he in a snobby way said his dog was a show dog from a show breeder.. right off the bat I saw it was much too small to show and that it had a very very bad underbite.. I saw some woman advertise in my area show qaulity maltese.. on viewing her website her dogs can show as well as my 190 pound body can be a playboy centerfold.. so I asked is it the show breeder that advertises in the paper. he said real super snobby NO real show breeders do not advertise.. I then opened the dogs mouth and said well this sir is a total disqaulification from the show ring.. this dog can never be shown nor bred.. he turned red.. maybe he wont come back.. but worse when I was grooming her I discovered her hind knees turn in so horridly that she can not stand on her back legs what so ever.. I see this all the time.. people getting ripped off..
well anyway we get our first shipment of puppies.. it was all exciting we recieved 10 1 I sent back a boston because he was of bad qaulity and looked to have the beginings of demo... I made a play area for the poor critters that came off a semi.. (a clean one but they were caged in grates).. one chihuahua shat blood at arival but she was happy and all chipper bright eyed and normal temp.. I freaked anyway I called Hunte they said its just the stress.. then an hour later the cocker started hacking.. I am like great our very first order and we have kennel cough.. I called them again, again they said its proably stress but watch her well.. by the next day I had to have her hospitalized.. she was the prettiets cocker I ever saw.. I was saddened over her condition.. the chihuahua passed the health exam.. the vet.. one I was not familar with ,I did not like much but my partner picked him..he over charged us then revacinated them for kennel cough but with the nasal ... I called Hunte they said the nasal can cause a upper respitory on stressed pups.. I am like oh great.. the chihuahua stopped pooing blood. the vet also put all the puppies on doxycycline because they were from the same area as the poor cocker who was all depressed hacking her brains out.. and snot coming from her nose..one by one they all got sick..the vet was freaking me out.. I called my personal vet.. I finally got my partner to see the light and we got them all fixed up.. but before this happened. the chihuahua which I named crashed..I rushed her to my vet..we got her back up she was so near death.. she started pooing blood again and her temp was sooo low.. my vet was concerned about the doxycyline. she had her vacination as hunte said.. so parvo was resally ruled out.. my vet had to give her a blood trasfussion because she could not keep her sugar up..she was not digesting food..I stayed up all night with her.. she kept puking on me and crying.. she screamed a few times after going through 5 seizures and died.. neocropsy discovered parvo.. Hunte swore this was not the norm.. that was one of the hardest things I ever went through.. I cried a river.. pups I raised never even had worms.. I never seen a parvo death nor have I ever seen kennel cough.. wait no once from a rescue org I use to groom for free had KC.. I booted them back to kingdom come.. they were nasty and abused the animals they suposedly rescued.. well anyway we are freaked out about hunte.. but I got all the pups healthy and boy were they cute and happy.. we feed only solid gold puppy.. so they all got shiny and healthy.. so Hunte apologized. and we order another batch..seems kennel cough is normal with them.. but our vet cured them so fast and it was like rescuing them so we made a few more orders.. every time thier prices going up.. here we are a new store and paying up to 800 dollars for pups after shipping and cost.. how are we to make a profit then we have to hold on to them for 2 weeks to make sure they dont give the cough to others.. then they dont send us the types of pups we need.. we order them they dont make it..they even sent us nutered dogs without telling us they were nutered.. the last kennel cough they sent took longer to get rid of.. I said no more never again.. I already started to do my own brokering and buying local.. the chihuahua always sticking in my mind.. the clincher was when our beloved scottie pup we got from Hunte started pooing blood and puking.. we kept her at our vets for 2 days.. ended up it was the antibiotics.. poor thing had the hard core kennel cough.. my vet and I had a long talk.. and I told him never again these brokers.. he said I can still get it buying from different breeders.. I am willing to take that chance because so far so good.. now I can tell the new owners how the parents were.. what color how big what kind of personality.. people like that and should have that.. I also know the pups I sell are not coming from stupid puppy mills.. I did not believe it until I saw it.. and buyer beware of teacups.. normal litters are not that small.. those dogs are small because they were not given a proper start in life.. the pups I buy now are of normal size, they make all the Hunte pups look like teacups.. I do have a few breeders that have dogs that naturally produce a real teacup..but they are rare.. but please I cant be the only one out there with a clue and a conscience.. dont generalize and slam all stores and please someone E-mail me what I should call myself I am not a kennel nor a pet store I am just a groomer that use to show that has a clue that sells a few small breed AKC only pups..my ultimate goal is to breed them all myself .. I am just tired of lies and all the kaka.. but I wont give up or give in I will reset the bar.. one thing I never understood from true animal lovers.. slamming or trying to ban something never works nor does it change anything.. change always comes from within.. scaring good hearted people away from an aspect of the pet industry just fills it with those who do not care..
NO responsible breeder will ever sell a dog to a pet store. They're all from backyard breeders and puppymills, regardless of their claims.

All pet stores should follow PetsMart's example and adopt out, rather than sell, dogs, cats and other animals.
Ginger, guess what? You ARE a puppy mill. Congratulations! DON'T. Stupid selfish backyard-breeding cow.
"well anyway we get our first shipment of puppies..."
So in other words, Ginger, you bought these puppies from a puppy mill (!!!)...thus giving them money and encouraging them to churn out even more defective abused dogs. You're about as inbred as your dogs, aintcha honey?
Maltese/Maltepoo puppies that are raised in the home with the whole family. They live in any room they want. They play and run and slide down the hall way as if they are surfing for the money. I was raised to treat animals the same way you would want to be treated. In our home we raise Maltese/Maltepoo puppies and do not let them go home till they are 12 wks or older depending on the physical and emotional sturdiness of the puppy. A lot of times we do not let them go till 4-6 months old. We like them to have a strong family foundation before leaving and exploring new adventures. The puppies eat, play and stay and travel with the whole family.

Calling All Pets on E. 76th St. is the BEST!
Oh, I didn't realize I was supposed to give a bunch of reasons. Calling All Pets is great because of their super nice owner and helpful staff, excellent customer service (they will order almost anything for you and go out of their way to get what you want), convenient location and hours, and large selection. They also give you a card that they punch whenever you buy something and when you fill it up, you get $30 to use in the store.
All of the postings have been dog- and cat-focused, so for us bird-lovers, there's only one -- Bird Camp on 53rd and 2nd. The boarding is relatively cheap, and the toy selection is great. Loving in Manhattan, you have to pay the price for organic bird supplies, but when you don't have the time to order online, Bird Camp rocks.

The only good pet store is the one that doesn't sell pets. They get the pets from puppy mills where they breed the mothers at least 2 times a year with no medical care no home except for a wire mesh cage outside in the rain snow and heat and have the upstairs cages dropping feces and urine on them. The skin of the dogs get so burned by the acid and no one cares, certainlyh not the breeder or the pet store or the clients that brag that they paid thousands of dollars for the pet. Adopt Help stop the suffering of animals in puppy mills. If you don't believe me google images of puppy mills.

I think LE PET SPA in BPC is incredible. They are so genuine and caring and that includes the whole staff.Bobby obviosly loves his clients and what he does.I placed an order for a five pound bag of food and they sent me a ten pound bag just to be nice at no extra cost. What I really love is the caring they give towards my pet.t
I was totally disgusted when I read Ginger's post. I know it was a long time ago, but it's people like that who should have to go through what a puppy mill puppy goes through as punishment.
They eat, shit and sleep in a tiny concrete cage and don't get any love. Poor frightened little babies who end up spending their whole lives scared. Anyone who would be stupid enough to buy puppies from a mill (call it whatever you want) should be shot.
Ginger is obviously an idiot and I only wish there were more gov't regulations in this industry. The only way to buy a puppy is from a reputable breeder. One that lets you visit their house...one that only has a couple of litters per year AT MOST and never one that lets them go at 6 weeks. I hope you get what you deserve Ginger.
I also got a wonderful puppy that was sick and extremely inbred from LE PETITE PUPPY. I hate that store. Plus, I went in there one day and there were dogs shivering in the window. They NEED TO BE PUT OUT OF BUSINESS!
My partner and I are looking to design a very simple yet classic website..we have a wonderful new dog line and are ready to create a website for it..however our budget is not as big as we would like it to be right now..so any suggestins would be appreciated..

Hi Robin, I'm a pet lover (with three wonderful cats, but I adore dogs too!) and web designer who creates simple but elegant designs at very affordable prices. Please feel free to visit my site at www.falling-sky.com to see if our style is a good fit for your needs.
On topic: my favorite store is the Furry Paws chain, in particular my local shops (one at 57th & 1st avenue, the other at 54th and 2nd). The 54th street shop is large and sunny, with all kinds of treats and goodies. Tons of different brands for your furry friends. (Feathery or scaly friends too!) The staff are helpful and friendly, and I love the in-house cats who watch the goings-on with their usual seen-it-all demeanor. Such sweeties! Anyway, the store delivers orders both quickly and accurately. In fact, you even used to be able to order online at www.delivery.com, but I don't see that option anymore. That's a shame, I wish they'd make online ordering available again.
All in all, I recommend Furry Paws most highly.
Just wanted to tell all you dog lovers about the petite alma line of doggie birth announcements and note cards i just designed. They are sold at the tiny prints website. here's the link

My favorite pet store is Ollie's Place, at 26th Street, between 3rd and 2nd Avenue. As far as I know, it's the only nonprofit pet supply store in the city--all profits go to support the 30-40 rescued cats they have up for adoption at any given time. There are some cats in the store section downstairs, but most of them are upstairs, playing in a big room. If they have someone working upstairs, you can go and play with the cats.
They have a good selection of cat and dog food, mostly health food type. The prices are pretty low.
I highly recommend going to "SV Quality Pups" on Stillwell Avenue, in Brooklyn, NY to get a pedigree pup. It is definately worth the trip. I have purchased a couple of my "babies" through them. Each of my maltese pups have been very healthy and beautiful. The owners & staff there is friendly, knowledgeable, and caring about your needs. The place was very clean and prices were very reasonable for quality & well cared for/healthy pups. They breed maltese, yorkies, shih tzus, etc. Their customer service continues even after purchase. I have contacted them with questions about puppy care and they were patient and courteous. Many of my friends have also purchased their dogs from them and everyone was happy.
I have a Pure breed Pembrook Welsh corgi..male..3 years old..ready to stud..unfortunatley I have to sell him do to travel..do you sell animals for customers or know of whom I could contact??
Thank you

I agree that Le Petit Puppy should be put out of business. They abuse the animals, they lie about the dogs, they lie over and over in the faces of thir customers and they've killed animals there. Plus they are theives!
Who can send the contact information of the owner?

Does anyone have any experiences with "Pets on Lex" the puppy/kitten store on 79th and lex? I bought a puppy there on impulse (i know, that's irresponsible, but i just fell in love with the little pup!) and only afterwards started to do my homework. First of all, they didn't have her registration papers on hand at the time of her purchase, they didn't even seem to care about what kind of lifestyle i have and whether i'd be able to provide for her (luckily i can and she's hardly ever alone) and when i went back to the store, about a month later to get her registration papers, the owner, Lou Gramma, started yelling at me defensively when I asked for both the contact info for the breeder and why the reg. papers weren't available yet! That was a long run-on sentence, sorry. Point is, I know the Better Business Bureau has complaints on record about the place, and I was curious to know who else has had any complaints about them. PLEASE LET ME KNOW!! thanks.
I have three puppies from Le Petit Puppy,
A teacup maltese, a 2 teacup yorkies. I havent have any problems at Le petit puppy. Everytime I had questions about either training or because one of my dogs looked sick, they always helped me. My neighbor also has a dog from le petit puppy and he has no complains. I think is an beautiful store which is always clean. If you compare le petit with other pet shops even down the street, you can observe how well they take care of their puppies. I will recomend Le Petit Puppy to anyone who wants to buy a dog.
i am coming to ny to purchase a teacup maltese and yorkie....we are getting the babies from petite puppy in brooklyn...we are traveling from south carolina...please please someone let me know if this is not the right place to purchase. please
The only pet shop I would recommend is Pets on Lex. The reason I say this is because me and my family have bought over 6 animals from them. They are official. We payed alot for our little pooches, but you can tell that they really care about their customers. I know everyone always says "no responsible breeder would ever deal with pet shops", but I actually got to meet the breeders of the puppies I purchased from Pets on Lex and they said they know that because of the location of the store they know that they would get good homes. This is coming from the breeder of my yorkie. I was very skeptical at first, but after I got to talk to the breeder on the phone and meet the family in person I was convinced that I wasn't dealing the your typical average pet shop. Pets on Lex is one of a kind and I wouldn't even consider them a pet shop. They are above your average. A friend of mine bought a puppy from another shop and couldn't even find that the breeder even existed and had thousands of dollars in vet bills and the pet shop wouldn't even acknowledge my friend. Just by looking at the dog you can tell it's from a puppy mill. I know for a fact that Pets on Lex don't deal with puppy mills. If you decide to get a puppy that would be the only pet shop I would recommen.d. Besides that go to a breeder. By the way I am a veterinarian in Florida.
I saw an adorable puppy in Le Petit Puppy on Christopher Street and would like to know if anyone has had recent experience with this store? I would appreciate any information you might have as to the quality of the puppies, the reputation of the store, and how responsible they are after your purchase in case something goes wrong. Many thanks!
Sandy,
I recently bought a frenchy at Le Petit Puppy
Something I noticed they socialized with the dogs A LOT. I went to the store at 5pm and one of the sales person was brushing and playing with one of the dogs. My frenchy is the most beautiful thing ever. I called 3 days later because I really didnt know how to paper train him and they were very helpful. I will recomend this place to all my friends and family.

Le Petit Puppy is the best puppy-mill-enabler I've ever been to. The staff steered me toward a $1500 "ChihuaDaDoodle." Fidel's hip dysplasia and kennel cough just add to his loveable cuteness! Too bad his mother will be kept continually pregnant and live a miserable, short existence. But they really ARE the best. Just look at all the gushing suggestions.

I'm so disappointed to read the bad reviews on Le Petit Puppy. I purchased two puppies from there in March of 2007. One is a Boston Terrier and the other is a Cocker Spaniel/Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix. They were both very easy to train and well socialized and are very healthy. The other puppies in the store were always being played with by other customers and employees. The salesperson we worked with was very helpful and knowledgable and we were able to also bring home all the puppy supplies we needed right there. I am very happy with the way they have turned out. Nearly every day I think about how lucky I am to have these wonderful dogs because of other people I know whose dogs are just terrible.

I'm stunned that people want to BUY pets. Animal shelters are overflowing with wonderful pets, pets that have been vetted, been given personality evaluations and have been handled with love. I defy any pet store to tell me they've done the same with each of their pets. Their animals have come from puppy mills.
http://www.stoppuppymills.org/
Pets on Lex is one of the worse offenders along with Le Petit Puppy. Nobody should be surprised that their sweet little dog, who they BOUGHT at one of these puppy mill abusers gets sick. If I were living in a small crate with 4-5" of urine soaked feces and rarely fed and never touched I'd get sick.
Think about it people. When the last animal has been adopted from the last animal shelter maybe you consider BUYING a pet from a reputable breeder but under no circumstances should anyone ever BUY a pet from a pet store.

Don't be fooled; every pet store in the city sells dogs that are from puppy mills. The average puppy costs them only $25 from irresponsible breeders that keep the dogs in despicable conditions.
I recently adopted a "designer dog" from the city shelter that is as cute as any dog in a pet store.

Dear animal lovers,
please... do not buy puppies from pet stores!
Let's stop the puppy mills from destroying poor innocent lives.
Go to a shelter and adopt! Like i did. I got the most amazing dog from a shelter.
Save a life.
