The Bird's Nest—or the Beijing National Stadium designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Herzog & de Meuron—has quickly become the face of the 2008 Olympic Games. For those of us stuck stateside during AT's Escape Month, we've devised a way to bring a little of Beijing's Olympic design home to your apartment...
We're big fans of drawing inspiration from architecture and reinterpreting it into our homes. Herzog & de Meuron's Bird's Nest is no exception: with its sustainable elements and striking form, we found several products that you can purchase to bring the design into your home.
The RD4 Chair LE by Richard G. Liddle is made of 100% recycled plastic waste and, much like the Olympic stadium, is much stronger than its airy openness would suggest. The chair's seemingly random lines echo the stadium's steel construction and wrapping gesture.
The Recycled Side Table by Matt Gagnon is made of homasote (100% post-consumer recycled paper board) and is designed to sit and store either upright or on its side. The table's strong geometry and matching gray and red color scheme echos that of the stadium.
If pattern is what you're after, then Erica Wakerly's Angles wallpaper is for you. The papers are metallic and have that steel feeling in addition to the same kinetic energy of pattern as the Olympic stadium.
