Option GlobeSurfer III: Turning Your 3G Signal Into A Movable WiFi Hotspot

While we're unsure whether or not this technology will take off any time in the near future, it's a cool idea nonetheless. The Option GlobeSurfer III is a router that takes a wireless 3G signal and distributes it to whichever general area you're looking to provide instant internet access to. That, in addition to a slew of connectivity options and integrated LCD screen, makes for an extremely interesting package that's got our ears perking up in sheer interest...

Pushing the envelope for conventional broadband routers, the GSIII introduces a cleverly implemented solution that we haven't really had thought about up until now. With 3G being fairly new to mainstream consumers, the thought of being able to sacrifice broadband service and rely completely on your phone for instant internet access sounds a little bit ahead of its time, but that's just at least for the time being.

If your phone allows tethering (turning your 3G signal into a WiFi signal on an external device), this option could possibly be one of the greatest ideas on the market just waiting to explode into consumer households within the coming year. Still, whether or not it'll catch on is really up to their marketing team, but we're truly interested in the idea and will continue to keep track of new methods to cut costs in 2009, while maintaining (or even improving) the ways we live today.

You can connect both hard drives and printers to the router, allowing for networked storage and print sharing. There is also an integrated LCD screen that shows signal strength, missed calls, and other cell phone-centric info. The whole technical spiel can be found here for those interested in the actual specifications behind the magic.

There's no word on release date or pricing yet, but we can only hope it'll probably be sometime this year given all of the details and design proof of concept already available.
