We're always searching for new and interesting ways to display (or house) our favorite collections. Recently we stumbled upon this very cool kitchen wall, courtesy of flickr user hownowdesign. We aren't bundt pan collectors, but we certainly wish we were after seeing her kitchen.
• What: Multi-colored seconds picked up at a discount and put together randomly
• Where: Private residence, Piedmont, CA
• When: Photo taken Wednesday, May 14, 2008
• Why: Because it shows that doing things on budget can still give you great results. The homeowners picked up seconds and ends of boxes from a local tile store in complementary colors (greens and blues) and mixed them randomly on the wall for a water-like effect.
We're dying here. It's the second day in a row where temperatures have reached the 90s and we have to ask, what happened to spring? It seems we've gone from 50 and windy as all get out to 90 and sweltering overnight. Ah well, we'll amuse ourselves by opening all the windows and looking online for a nice fan to cool us off.

Drum roll, please...the Northwest Regional Winner is... Dave and Rob's Small Dark and Handsome! Congratulations, Dave and Rob! (And thanks again to everyone from the Northwest who entered Small Cool 2008! Jump below to see the winners.)
We just finished an article in the Bay Guardian discussing CitiApartments, one of the biggest rental companies in San Francisco, and their treatment of tenants in rent-controlled housing. We were surprised to read some of the allegations against the company...

AT:SF, I have a big empty space on top of my fireplace (it is supposed to be for a TV) in our formal living space; it's deep too. I do not want to put TV in there. Any suggestions as to how I can utilize it and make beautiful?...

A well-selected quilt can add color, warmth and a touch of grandma-style comfort to a room; but go too far and... well, maybe we don't want our home to be that much like grandma's.
With things continuing to heat up this weekend in the Bay Area, the Sydney Double Lounger is looking pretty good. Lying on opposite sides of the lounger, you and a friend can see and talk with each other while either trying to stay out of the heat or going all out and embracing it.

Oh, Monument. The reason it's one of our favorite shops in the whole world is because they're so brave when it comes to picking fabrics for their re-upholstery. Case in point, this Jens Risom chair. The chair itself is so striking and beautiful... Add that Paul Smith fabric and vavoom! We're in love.
We recently spotted this awesome bookshelf on Flickr and just had to share it with you. Says Eccentric Scholar, "I aligned my books in honor of the Rainbow Snake of Australian mythology. (Hence, the colors move in a zig-zag pattern, from top left to top right, then right to left, and so on)."

The yellow and gray trend has been all over the place lately, and while we still think it is a great combination, we like to switch things up a bit and think lavender or mauve is a great substitution. The general feeling is basically the same - we'd lean towards a grayish light purple - but might be enough of a change to keep it fresh.

The folks over at Sustainable Style Foundation tipped us off on 1 Hotel & Residences, a luxury, "eco-sensitive" hotel and condo development on 2nd and Pine in Seattle, right up from Pike Place Market.
We love it when people think outside the box, especially in public spaces. The fence surrounding the stairwell at the 16th St. Mission BART station is a great example of this - instead of boring wrought iron the fences are made of panels cut to look like colorful Mexican paper flags. Brilliant.

Hi AT:SF, We're in the middle of renovating an old house and decided on a wood-burning stove for the living room. The stove has been fitted and works really well... but looks awful. I can't seem to find much inspiration for a surround for this type of stove but I'd rather not go the 'traditional' fireplace route if I can help it...
This picture does not exaggerate. The advertising for this product seems to revolve around pet hair, but that doesn't begin to describe how much of a miracle-worker the rubber squeegee-cum-brush has turned out to be for us.
Our apartment has hardwood floors with area rugs. It's too small to store a proper upright vacuum cleaner, but the rugs are too big and heavy to make shaking them out practical on a regular basis.
