Isn't this the normal time of the year for the Santa Anna Winds to kick in? When they do, I understand it can bake even the coast.

I bought the 8" fan 3-4 years ago, and I really like it. I use it a lot in the summer, and it has held up well. The 8" fan is appropriate for a very small room, or as a personal desk fan.

I wanted another fan, and I bought this Hunter Century 90021 fan instead, since it has similar styling and is much less expensive ($55 for the 12" fan at this link vs. $139 for the RestHW fan); cheaper even than the fall RestHW sale prices. I've used it a few times on the warm days we've had this spring, and it seems to be a good fan so far.

I didn't think the Santa Ana winds affected San Francisco?

I believe the Santa Anas mostly affect SoCal, and usually in late summer/autumn.

It's just plain hot here in SF now - and boy, do I need a fan!

I had been drooling over fans like that for a long time, but could never bring myself to spend that much, especially since I had several perfectly working (albeit ugly) fans. This was my thrifty solution

In the bay area, very few homes have air conditioning. When there's a heat wave in the bay area, it's brutal, because it's such a rare occurrence.

Make that the Bay Area that is specifically around the bay. LOL!

It got plenty hot inland, and yet that was also considered part of "The Bay Area".

We in the city (San Francisco), who live at the coast, get our "summer" in spring and autumn.

The rising heat inland during summer sucks in the cool air from surrounding areas, and that is what helps to make the summer overcast here at the coast.

Generally, we don't need air conditioners.

I'm always amused by Restoration Hardware's pricing and find it hard to believe they can stay in business. There must be a lot of people who never comparison shop.

you should also mention that the fans are whisper quiet in addition to the classic vintage styling. the bigger telescoping floor fan on the highest setting sounds like other cheaper brands' lowest setting. it's quite amazing. justifies the price tag just a bit.

also.. the entry says the colors are black, silver and nickel.. just wanted to point out that silver is supposed to be the signature RH silver sage and nickel is a brushed finish..

can i buy eco-friendly spray paint?

I have the Hunter Century too and it's a great fan and very similar in looks. Well made and quiet - Amazon has the 12" for $48 bucks right now.

We have the hunter century in the bedroom.
Ran it all winter long and most important it comes apart nicely for cleaning!!

I also have a vornado "air circulator" and its my most fav, i use it to pull cooler air in from the shaded side of my apt.

I had the Hunter fan last year (key word - HAD) but after a few months it just stopped. No reason, just stopped.

When buying a desk fan can I also suggest buying some paper weights?
