The SFMOMA Artists Gallery is an extension of the museum, of sorts, that's located in Fort Mason. Like any other gallery they have regular shows and work to be purchased, but the thing that gets everybody all worked up and gushing about the place is the art rental program. Basically, you get the thrill of going to a gallery and taking home some great art, but without that queasy feeling of having just dropped a wad of cash - the rental rate is a fraction of the cost to buy. If the artwork grows on you, you can purchase it, but if not, take it back and find something else you enjoy. A total win-win.
