The Gallery: Deborah Cushman

6-13-cushman skyline.jpgWhen we first wrote about Sonoma-based painter Deborah Cushman, we didn't know that she'd worked as a textile designer in New York, or that she studied under Elmer Bischoff and Joan Brown (of the Bay Area Figurative School), or that she was inspired by Wolf Kahn. No, while we definitely see those influences now when we look at her colorful rural and urban landscapes, we just fell for her paintings because they're lovely -- and because they seem so quintessentially Californian.

We especially love the 8x10 plein air paintings that she sells on LittlePaintings.com. Each painting is mounted and ready to hang -- and priced at just $100.

You can also read more about Cushman here and see larger paintings here.

Prolific body of work--how long does each one take you? I think my favorite is 'Bert's Barn' at the bottom of your webpage--I like the high grasses right in front of the viewer.

In these paintings Deborah captures the essence of her subject matter, from busy, pulsing "Chinatown" and San Francisco skyscrapers, to the subtle, peaceful brushstrokes of "Wambold Road #1" and "Above Manhattan Beach."
Colorful and apropos paintings which take me "there." Glorious!
