Handwoven Rugs by Gene Straus Designs Weaving Studio

7-3-08-gene-straus.jpg

The rugs out of Gene Straus Designs Weaving Studio are made mostly from recycled textile scraps, including wool and denim. Available in a standard 3x5 size, the rugs would be beautiful at the foot of a bed or in front of a fireplace.

Look!: Elyse Sewell's Hanging Laundry Sack

7-4-08-elysesewell-3.jpg

Some of you may remember Elyse Sewell as the second runner up on the first season of America's Next Top Model. She currently writes an engrossing blog about her experiences as a working model in Asia, and in a recent post about her tiny quarters in Hong Kong, we saw this innovation she uses to cope with the lack of space — a laundry bag that hangs from a hanger in the closet.

The Split Ruler

7-3-08-split-ruler.jpg

This elegant tool would quickly find a use in our home, for applications like framing and sketching out floor plans. Because, sad to say, our ruler and pencil often become separated right when we need them together.

The Waspinator 2

7-2-08-waspinator.jpg
We can't say that we're so one with nature that wasps don't bother us — stinging or not, the buzzing and flying around is enough to drive anyone crazy — but chemicals and traps bug us even more. Even removal gives us a pang, after the insects have worked so hard.

An Easy-Care Yard Can Still Have Soul
The Oregonian: 06.20.08

Low-maintenance gardens don't just save time and energy, but precious water resources as well. When Lisa Russo and Jason Collins undertook renovating their 1926 craftsman bungalow, they made a low-maintenance garden a priority — over the bathroom and kitchen.

Eco Gardening Kit from Biome Lifestyle

7-1-08-eco-gardening-kit.jpg

In a fitting segue from garden month to green home month, we spotted this eco gardening kit from Biome Lifestyle. Practical and very beautiful, this would make a great gift for a stylish and green-leaning gardener.

New Use for an Empty Wine Glass Rack

7-1-08-wine-glass-rack.jpg
When we replaced our mismatched, beater wine glasses with a nicer set, we didn't dare hang them over the sink (prime accident zone for glasses, we found). But left with the empty rack, we sought a way to keep such conveniently located storage in use.

Shelf with Creeping Branch Hooks

We love white patterns against white walls, and this shelf lends that modern-but-soft look, in addition to providing some very creative shelving.

Hanging Art Outside

6-10-08-outdoor-livingetc-2.jpg

With the season's emphasis on recreating whole indoor spaces outdoors — not just living rooms anymore, but bedrooms, kitchens and even bathrooms — there is one thing we see braving the elements considerably less often: hanging art.

Maxine's Pickity Patch
Seattle

6-30-08-maxines.jpg
When we visited Urbanweeds a couple of weeks ago, we also happened to be on the lookout for fresh cut flowers for our apartment — we felt like stepping up from the usual grocery store fare that day. A staff person recommended Maxine's, which she swore was one of her favorite florists in town. She also warned us that it would be an experience, and she wasn't kidding.

Koko's Pop Plastic Floormats

6-27-08-koko-mats.jpg
Just because a mat is destined for outdoor use doesn't mean that it has to be bland and trashy. And conversely, just because something is made of plastic doesn't mean it has to be garish. Koko's Pop line of plastic floormats perfectly finds this balance.

Look!: Pegboard Garden

6-27-08-pegboard-garden.jpg
We're considering a pegboard wall for our kitchen, and our research has awakened us to a world of applications for this versatile hardware store staple. This indoor pegboard garden is just one of them.

Emperor Gong from VivaTerra

6-26-08-gong.jpg

We hope that it's not just the novelty of having a gong on one's premises that makes this infinitely appealing to us. Scratch that, it is. But what a dramatic alternative to wind chimes, indeed.

Three Creative Cutout Coffee Tables on Etsy

6-26-08-coffee-table-1.jpg 6-26-08-coffee-table-2.jpg 6-26-08-coffee-table-3.jpg

We're in the market for a new coffee table, and spotted these on Etsy. While we need one with the surface completely open and intact, we thought we'd share these finds with those of you who can afford the space to make a statement.

Look!: Shingle Silhouettes

6-26-08-shingle.jpg

So maybe we'd get a wee bit in tons of trouble if we tried this on the shingles of our rental, but Paul Paquette has made an artform of the wood cuttings in the town of Seward, Alaska.

Look! Faucet Coatrack

6-25-08-faucet-coatrack.jpg

As renters, it's easy to get wistful about great building salvage — replacing sinks and molding can be out of the question in a lot of rentals. But this is a great way to showcase and repurpose really cool old fixtures, or even just plain ones.

Get a Glimpse Behind the Scenes of Designers' Gardens
The Oregonian: 6.25.08

6-25-08-oregonian-3.jpg

This Saturday, the Association of Northwest Landscape Designers is sponsoring a behind-the-scenes tour of gardens throughout Oregon that have been designed by members of the association.

Eva Solo Rain Gauge

6-24-08-rain-gauge.jpg

While it may be obvious to us when it has been raining, a rain gauge might be handy to back up our tales of woe to our out-of-town friends. But more seriously, the device would help us balance the watering schedule of our outdoor plants with the natural bounty of H2O.

Mirrored Spheres and Stones for the Garden

6-24-08-spheres.jpg

There's something about finding a shiny object in an unexpected place, and a mirrored sphere strategically nestled in flower beds and landscaping can add geometric interest while making the garden look more lush. They're also purported to ward off evil spirits in old folklore.

Garden Inspiration from Aloe Designs

6-23-08-aloe-design-1.jpg 6-23-08-aloe-design-2.jpg
Aloe Designs is a Vancouver, B.C.-based garden design consultancy that helps their clients see garden spaces "as an integral part of living, home and healing." We couldn't agree more with this philosophy, and their portfolio offers little vignettes of what it looks like in practice (lots more pictures after the jump).

Sun Shades from Inmod

6-23-08-sun-shade.jpg
It's nice to know that options for outdoor shading go beyond the standard canvas tent. Though it may not look as effective as a more traditional umbrella shape, the three discs of Inmod's Tri Corale sun shade offer a maximum diameter of five feet in coverage.

Urbanweeds

6-23-08-urbanweeds.jpg

6-23-08-urbanweeds-logo.jpgWe're used to having to eke out a modern vibe for our houseplants and patio using pots and plants from more traditional and country-style garden stores. It's not that it's terribly difficult to accomplish — multiples and succulents go a long way — but it is such a breath of fresh air to visit Urbanweeds, where modern indoor and small-space gardening is the central concept.

Byer Pangean Glider Chair from REI

6-20-08-glider.jpg

A couple of weeks ago we posted a question from Portia, a reader who was looking for lounge chairs akin to those in Hyde Park, London. Since then we've had our radar up, and spotted this version, at REI of all places.

Light Strings on Sale at Smith & Hawken

6-20-08-light-string-bee.jpg

It's kind of the silver lining on a wet grey cloud: a lot of summer furnishings are going on sale right as our summer gets started. Like these bird-and-bee themed light strings from Smith & Hawken (more styles after the jump).

Driftwood Succulent Garden from VivaTerra

6-19-08-driftwood.jpg

Succulents are gorgeous in their dusty, washed-out colors and squat, full shapes. The driftwood basket containing this succulent garden beautifully complements these qualities.
