Renters Fight Back
SF Bay Guardian

5-16-08 rentals.jpgWe just finished an article in the Bay Guardian discussing CitiApartments, one of the biggest rental companies in San Francisco, and their treatment of tenants in rent-controlled housing. We were surprised to read some of the allegations against the company...

According to some tenants, the company used intimidation and building negligence to try and force out rent-stabilized residents of newly acquired buildings. CitiApartments promised to look into the allegations and included that the company tries to help "financially troubled" tenants. Though we've seen signs all over the city for their rentals and even checked some out the last time we were apartment hunting, we've never lived in a CitiApartments-run building and have no experience with them. Does anyone out ther have any stories to share?

Read the article here.

There are a ton of resourses and support for tenants in SF, Berk and Oakland. Many renters have stories and are good to lend support and point others in the right direction to report mistreatment.

Just read Yelp posts on the subject. I'm currently looking for an apartment in SF and now skip any Cityapartments-ads.

Wow. I followed the link from Lilli K. and then started reading the claims in the City Attorney's suit against CitiApartments.

It makes my landlord/company look like an angel. Scariest thing I've ever read.

I just want to know why they are still allowed to do business. None of what I read is acceptable.

I am currently a tenant and while away for two nights and three days, my apartment was broken into, computers stolen. Since the incident, CitiApartments has been completely negligent to help secure our apartment. Our property manager is just a pawn and is helpless to get anyone's attention at the main office. Five days after our place was robbed, two other apartments we robbed in the same fashion. They changed the door code after that without informing me or my boyfriend.

I would suggest that no one use Citiapartments. My boyfriend and I are desperate to get out as soon as possible.

Scary.

My fiance and I just leased (today!) our first apartment in San Francisco, and I totally panicked when reading this--I grabbed our copy of the lease and scanned it for any CitiApartments indication. Thank God there are none.

I can't imagine being stuck in a lease with people who treat you this way. I'll definitely warn other friends/couples I know who are currently in the market for new housing...

I recall moving to SF, and a girl from Citi driving me to a showing of a $1500 studio on Cathedral Hill, for which she wanted... $8000 deposit. No shite.

She graciously offered to let my parents cosign for the amount, and when I declined she stomped off in a rage and left me there.

Can't say I want to go back, but they seem to own 75% of the available units here, so I can't say I never will, either.

I rented with them for year in 2004, I was 19 and it was my frist apartment, a studio. The agent I used wasn't the nicest person, she kept rushing the process. My parents needed to co-sign which they did within a mere two days, but during that short span of time she phoned me constantly on my cell and at work saying things like "this is really getting long." The real problems started once I took residence. My building manager, while I wouldn't call him sexually harrassing, did constantly ask me out and after I refused enough times, he gave my phone number to a friend of his without my permission. Repairs that needed to be made that were there prior to my arrival also came out of my lease.

A former neighbor of mine whom I am still in contact with is currently suing him for something along the lines of gouging him for repairs and harrassing his guests on the basis of race.

Avoid the company at all costs!

CitiApartments is into price gouging and is unsafe. I was looking for an apartment for my mother here in San Francisco. She is on a fixed income, and we needed something affordable. CitiApartments was requesting three times the cost of rent to move into the apartment. The deposits are insane, and definitely not reasonable for those who are "financially troubled". They treated my mother with such little respect. I would never advise using the company.
