2006_06_08_retroatHome_logo.jpgRetro@Home specializes in Scandinavian and American mid-century furnishings, textiles and decorative arts. Owner Val Ibardolasa has a practiced eye for this era and continually refreshes the showroom with new pieces.

Showcasing designers such as Hans J. Wegner, Jens Risom, Charles and Ray Eames, and Paul McCobb (among many others), Retro@Home's furniture collection is extensive and includes seating, tables and storage units. There are also quirky and hard-to-find pieces like high-quality tiki paraphernalia, vintage European ceramics and the reissued, quintessentially Californian Architectural Pottery line.

Retro@Home also offers personalized interior design services, including custom upholstery, sewing and furniture design. Every piece is unique at Retro@Home, and much of it is collectible. Prices are fair, but reflect the hot market. Despite the clunky online interface, the store is certainly worth a visit in person.

wow! I'm stunned that they are still in business! congrats! I used to live down the street (moved away years ago) and at the time, Emeryville was still the stanky armpit of the bay area. I'm sure Pixar's studio and success have helped this little neighborhood bordering Oakland quite a bit.

If you plan to take the BART there from SF and walk from the station to the store....don't. It's in a terrible part of town. Also, call ahead to make sure they're open, because some people have taken the BART from SF to the east bay, made the walk from the station to the store along a street you don't want to walk on even during daylight, and arrived at the store only to find that it was closed during business hours.
