Psychedelic Snake Draught Excluder from Refab

12-6-refab-snake.jpg

An oldie but goodie. "Draught excluder" is apparently the fancy British way of saying"stuffed snake that keeps cold air from coming in under the door." If our mom didn't make them, someone's mom certainly did.

We love the updated, funky fabric choice on these - ironic, because the fabric is actually vintage. As such, each snake is unique and in limited quantity. Buckwheat husks make for a sweet-smelling filling (if you happen to get down on the floor and smell it).

I've been wanting to make these for the doors of our drafty (draughty?) house for ages. We have a toddler, a dog, and two cats. My husband and I have a bet as to how long they'd actually STAY at the door. He says two minutes. I say three, but only because there'd be a four-way scuffle before anyone managed to get at them.

I made one (minus the snake anatomical features) last night from the leg of some old pajama pants and filled it with rice. The cat is having fun attacking it, but she hasn't been brave enough/smart enough to actually drag it away from the door yet.

I have two filled with sand, which makes them heavy (as a doorstop too) and unlikely to attract insects or mice.

I desperately need this. I can pretty much slide my whole body under my front door... and i'm not a skinny girl.

Are these good for blocking sound also? Where can I get sand??? Besides the beach?

Sleek, you can buy playground sand (which is what you want) at pretty much any home store or garden center.

Thanks, Anna! Don't know why my mind didn't automatically go to Lowe's or Home Depot.

My Great Aunt Sadie had sand snakes for windows and doors in their drafty old Chatham house on the Cape. They go waaaay back further than that, too, as she remembered them from her childhood.

I used fish tank pebbles from Pet Smart for mine. I realized it would be better than having to vacuum up sand if they leaked.

Doppelganger, if you're worried about them getting knocked or dragged out of place, you can get two and attach them with a thin piece of fabric that would slide under the door. This picture describes it better than I can:

No match for cats or toddlers!
