apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

House Tour: Daniel and Jason's San Francisco Gem
San Francisco

Name: Daniel and Jason
Location: San Francisco
Size: 1,200 sq. ft. for apartment, 1,400 sq. ft. for studio
Years lived in: 28 years

9-30-housetourlogo.jpgWhen you get the opportunity and have the means to buy the old sheet metal workers union hall (built in 1906, right after the earthquake), you take it. And that's exactly what Daniel did 28 years ago. And most of the original design is still in place, like the pressed tin tiles that adorn the lower half of most of the walls. Nestled right in the middle of the Mission, the space provides Daniel and Jason with a spacious home, and a wonderful studio large enough for Daniel to create the elaborate and large-scale art he's known for.

It's a wonderful and beautiful (and rare!) thing when someone has lived in their space for over 20 years. You can tell that they've been able to work out the kinks, and that the space is truly what they want it to be (even though it's inevitable that things will be changed, like the artwork). You definitely get that feeling as soon as you enter Daniel and Jason's home. It's the very definition of eclectic, but it also possesses a certain calm and fluidity that makes you instantly at ease. The space is filled with amazing art that Daniel has both created and bought, and there's a clear happy medium between the two.

9-30-08daniel4.jpgAT Survey:

Our Style: Eclectic Zen (Daniel)-Baroque (Jason)

Inspiration: Mostly from objects and furniture

Biggest Challenge: Keeping the ceiling from falling down. It's fallen down once in a rain storm. I also have a lot of art and objects and I don't want to overwhelm the space, so they're in storage.

What Friends Say: They say it's very womb-like.

Biggest Embarrassment: The floors need to be refinished. With that said we think they add character.

Proudest DIY: The shower (Daniel laid the tile himself 28 years ago).

Biggest Indulgence: The kitchen counter, it's a granite from Brazil.

Best Advice: Get well-designed furniture, it'll last forever. Nothing in the house is new. Almost 30 years ago we picked up some Paul Frankl pieces (the sofa, the chairs, the dining table, the dining chairs...) around the city (secondhand). They're still good as new.

Dream Source: Everywhere! Look around!

9-30-08daniel3.jpgAppliances: Dishwasher is ASKO, stove is a Wolf.

Furniture: Paul Frankl, collected from around the city. Paul Frankl rules.

Artwork: 50% my own, all photographs (besides mine) are from Fraenkel Gallery (best photography gallery in the city).

Paint: Red: Benjamin Moore #1300

(Thanks, Daniel and Jason!)

You guys are killin' me with the fabulosity! What a stunner. I especially love that carved column, the sweetie cat, the kitchen counter, and the art, natch. Invite me over for a tour - I will bring flowers and desserts!

I fear god is gonna smite me with blindness!!...I'm so jealous!! two art pieces I'm truly envious of, the mobile and the wire sculpture in the bathroom, I also evious of anyone who's able to store their towels in their bathroom, my bathroom can barely accommodate me!! one question, is the livingroom too narrow to take the chairs under the windows off the wall?

Fantastic job guys, you are allowed to purrrrrr!!

Love the artwork & the kitty looks like a piece of art too :)
I'm usually not a big fan of red & its energy, but it works really well here with creating a calm, soothing space and making all that art pop.

Many of the pictures look like they are computer generated, i.e. pictures of rooms with computer generated objects (artwork, furniture) added. Very odd.

What paint was used on the blue walls?
I am looking for a color exactly like that
but can't find it anywhere.

I think I"m finding that I have extremely different taste from most AT'ers! The homes I love get bashed and the homes I don't feel anything for get adored. I love older buildings and all their great details, but all of the red and blueish grey and grey is just dull to me and makes all these great details just blend away.

And the photo of a baboon hanging in the kitchen is rather unappetizing...

Cool space - nice to see something different and unique on this site - that shows your personality. And in my town, too... fantastico. :)

I love your space!! I was wondering if you can tell me where you got those pendant lights. I have seen them at the Foreign Cinema as well and I love them!! I want to actually use it for a project I am currently working on and wants to know who the manufacturer is. I would appreciate it if you have that information!! Thank you :)
