apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Optibo

8-13-08 optibo.jpgWe know what a car looks like on hydraulics, but what about a whole apartment? This idea features a 25 meter (about 82 feet) multi-functional space with furniture that changes based on the needs of the dweller.

From what we can gather, the furniture is all attached to a hydraulic system under the apartment. There is a touch screen at the front of the unit which allows the owner to choose which type of room is needed (be it bedroom, living room, etc) and that configuration of furniture lifts up to fill the space. When it's time to change, just go back to the front and choose a different layout. The safety features include a code needed to change the furniture, as well as necessary confirmation that the flat is empty (so no one ends up trapped beneath the floorboards). The control panel also allows you to set the height of the bed, chairs and table to suit the individual. We'd love to see one in person, but for now you can check out the interactive tour on the Swedish company's website.

Reminds me of Bruce Willis' apartment in "The Sixth Element" - tho not quite as plastic and surreal...

...now if we could just get a floating Chinese-Restaurant to arrive outside the window, we'd have it made!

"Dwell" featured this a couple of years ago, and I STILL think it's genius!

Thx for the chuckle, Modfan. ;)
