Bay Area Sofas

2006_07_10_bay-area-sofas-l.jpgWe were just about to quit what has started to seem like a futile search for an affordable, modern-looking chair-and-a-half when we happened upon Bay Area Sofas.

2006_07_10_Greenwich-2-1.jpgThis Burlingame company specializes in custom upholstered pieces at very reasonable prices.
The designs are unabashed knock-offs of popular lines from mass retailers Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, and Room & Board.

This is a great resource if you're looking for transitional style in the form of a new upholstered piece at a good price and you need some customization.

Bay Area Sofas will make you a sofa, loveseat, chair, chaise lounge or sectional to your exact measurements and in a variety of fabrics that include micro fibers, prints and jacquards.

None of the styles are very daring or even original, but they do look comfy--and very much like the more expensive brands they're imitating (currently C&B's Huntley and Petrie, PB's Greenwich and Seabury, and Room & Board's Cameron and Metro. The amazing things is that these pieces are hand-made in LA and their prices that are 30-50% lower (and 10% cheaper if you pay with cash or check).

How about quality? Features include 100% kiln dried hardwood frames, "no sag" spring construction, and heavy weight insulation.

Does anyone have direct experience from shopping their Burlingame Showroom?

I went and checked out http://www.spheredesignsfurniture.com/ recently- they're worth a look and I think a bit cheaper than Bay Area Sofas. . .

but I may have to make a trip to Burlingame to check it out.

Their quality is Great for the price...Much better than some of the other places I went to. I love my sectional that I bought from them. I went to Crate and Barrel and found a style that I really liked, but it would not fit into my room. At Bay Area Sofas I got to choose the size…It fits perfectly. I also had a huge selection of fabrics to choose from. (that was the hard part-they had so many great fabrics, it was hard to decide)

I would recomend them to all my friends.

This Store Ripped My Family Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered a sectional sofa from this so called business, paid in full and was given a delivery date of 6 to 8 weeks. 13 weeks later i was calling, emailing, faxing and driving down there to get a delivery date for my non existent sofa... found out they filed bankruptcy and took my money with them!!!

No sofa, No money, NO GOOD !!!!!!!!!

Bay Area sofas was a great resource but apparently changed hands some months ago and is now defunct. Another concerned customer went by the premises today and found a notice is posted there asking people to contact an attorney: Darrell Horstet, 415-291-1900. Hope that is helpful to gfr16 and others.

AT:SF reader Peggy just wrote in to point us to this page on the Burlingame Police Department website -- it's dedicated to Bay Area Sofas fraud reports:
