Last week we were able to get a private look at the Chihuly exhibit at the de Young. The exhibit is 11,000 square feet. It's huge and it's breathtaking. Saying that it's absolutely crucial that you get over there before September 28th (when the exhibit is over) is an understatement. Take a look at the exhibit -- there's a slideshow with over 20 photos!

Don't let looks the photo fool you! That boat shown above is over 12 feet wide.
Chihuly at the de Young takes a comprehensive view of the artist's dramatic, colorful, and textured works that generate instant international recognition. The exhibition represents all the creative periods of the artist's career, from drawings to single vessels to architectural installations.
The exhibit is one of the most beautiful exhibit's we have ever seen. It's so colorful and vibrant. And the size of the pieces is unbelievable. They are so large.

This looks a lot like the exhibit (which thankfully became a permanent installation) Chihuly did at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus.

Reminds me too of the Chihuly's on display in the lobby of the Bellagio in Vegas.

I don't get Chihuly. Reminds me of 1970's custom vans. You know, shag rugs and airbrushed eagles. I guess I admire the technique but the aesthetic, to me, is just slightly above kitsch. No irony or self-awareness, either.

I saw his exhibit at the NY Botanical Gardens, and spread out over many acres, and temporarily, it was awesome. And I have seen some pieces in commercial establishments that I liked. A permanent installment, especially interior, might get old.

There's going to be a Chihuly exibit opening on Sept. 28th over here on the East Coast at RISD. Going to be a big event, it's the opening of our new Chase Center (museum extention and student gallery space). Should be cool, Chihuly is a RISD alum. :)
